Taking Online Math Courses at SMCC

Are you already registered?  Be sure to contact your instructor soon to get the particulars of taking your online math course through SMCC.   To contact anyone on campus by email, write to them using their first initial and last name @smccme.edu.  For example, Jane Doe's address would be jdoe@smccme.edu.   Be sure to include your full name and the course name, number and section in your note so your teacher will know who you are and what course you're taking.   (See E-Mail Etiquette for other good suggestions.)

Good luck with the new term!

Getting Started

Taking courses "at a distance" can open the doors of SMCC's math courses to those who would not normally have access to the course offerings. For example, geography, time constraints, or physical barriers might be standing in the way of taking a campus based course.  However, taking online courses is not for the faint of heart.  To help ensure you reach your goals please consider the following things:

  • Have you checked with an advisor? It is very important that you talk with a knowledgeable advisor before you begin any course of study. You want to be sure that what you do will actually be moving you towards your goal.

  • Do you have the self-discipline to work independently? The self-paced, independent mode of delivery for online courses is a two-edged sword. It's wonderful to have control of the pace and sequence of the lessons but it is also very easy to fall into procrastination. Successful completion requires a disciplined, consistent effort. Take this self test to assess your readiness to take take online courses.

  • Have you enlisted the help of a facilitator? You may be asked to come to campus occasionally to take an exam.  If you are to take your course totally at a distance - never coming to campus - you will likely need a facilitator for testing (check with your individual instructor regarding your specific course requirements).

Your facilitator is the person who is responsible for receiving, proctoring, and returning all exams. Facilitators must be education officials at a university, community college or public school site, other governmental or community officials or, if such persons are unavailable, other persons approved in advance by the instructor. Relatives cannot be facilitators. Click on the link here to access the facilitator's form.

Readiness Self Test*

Are you ready for distance learning and computer-based education?

DIRECTIONS: Use your browser's print feature to print this page. Check the answer that best describes your abilities, and be honest with yourself.

   YES    NO

I am able to work independently.
I am a good time manager.
I can capably take notes from lectures, textbooks, and television programs.
I am goal directed.  I set my sights on an end and usually achieve it.
I am able to gather information visually.
I am capable of independent learning.
I am confident of my academic abilities.
I like to complete what I start.
I believe I possess the appropriate reading skills for the course I want to take.
I am in control of my time - I decide how to use it.
I do not give up easily, even if confronted with obstacles.
              I am a self-motivated person.
I feel that high quality learning can take place without going to a traditional educational facility.
I can make a commitment of at least 6-9 hours a week?
I am comfortable communicating in writing?
I believe that what I learn is ultimately my responsibility.
I am not a procrastinator - I like to get things done.
I do not feel that I have to be part of a traditional class.

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions (at least 18) you'll do just fine with online courses. If you hesitated on some of these questions, you'll probably also do fine, but you'll need to work harder and more deliberately at staying in touch with your instructor. Now you know the qualities that make a successful online student. Good Luck!
