The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is a resource for adjunct and full-time faculty, offering workshops, luncheon discussions, and individual consultations as well as a variety of print and electronic resource material. Drawing primarily from the strengths of the teaching community at SMCC, the Center offers workshops dealing with classroom issues and teaching methodology as well as the use of technology.

Specific programs can be developed by request to meet individual, department, or campus-wide needs.

To view upcoming events see the calendar further down this page.

Center Activities

Workshops

Topics of past workshops have included Classroom Assessment Techniques, Active Learning, Classroom Action Research, Learner-Centered Teaching, Cooperative Learning, Dealing with Difficult Students, Linked Courses, and the Virtual Library. For a list of upcoming workshops see the CTE Calendar.

Discussion Luncheons

Discussion luncheons are one of the most popular offerings of the CTE. Topical discussions are held every few weeks. This is a chance to talk about teaching with fellow faculty as you enjoy the Friday buffet prepared by our Culinary Arts students. Themes for these discussions range from student retention to diversity issues. Suggest a theme for an upcoming discussion by mailing your suggestion to teachingexcellence@smccME.eduThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or look at the CTE Calendar for a list of upcoming luncheons.

Individual Consultations

Whether it's learning how to set up a projector for a PowerPoint presentation or how to make your students more actively involved in the classroom, there are a variety of experts available on campus to help you. Consultations are confidential and can include a variety of techniques from classroom observations or video taping, to small group instructional diagnosis (SGID).
