Graduation Information

Southern Maine Community College will celebrate its seventy-fifth commencement on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 2:00 pm. at the Cross Insurance Arena at 45 Spring Street in Portland from 2:00 pm until approximately 4:30 pm. 

 

If you have not applied to graduate, please file your graduation application as soon as possible so that you can have your status reviewed and diploma ordered. You can email your application to registration@smccME.edu for processing and to determine eligibility (on-track to graduate or within six credits of completing).

If you have applied to graduate, please check your email for complete details sent to you by the Dean of Students Office and complete the registration form (link embedded in email) if you plan on attending the ceremony.

 

  • Eligible participants (those on track or within six credits of graduating this spring) can pick up their free cap and gown on Thursday, April 28th, 2022, from 11:00am - 2:00 pm, at the SpringFest BBQ in the Dining Hall on the South Portland campus or on the Brunswick campus at the ASK Desk in the LL Bean Learning Commons from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. The college orders a variety of sizes so you do not need to pre-order.  However, you will not be able to pick up your cap and gown if there is an outstanding balance on your student account.  
  • Tickets are not required.  There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite, however, we would like you to tell us how many you plan to bring at the time you register to attend (registration form link above).  Admission is free. 
  • Effective March 14, 2022, guests are NOT required to show a negative test or proof of vaccination to attend an event. Although masks are strongly recommended for all guests, only guests between 2-11 must wear a mask while inside the arena. We will continue to monitor infection rates closely and if regional, local, or SMCC data or information from the CDC changes, updates to these policies may be necessary.  Continue to check back, or follow us on social media for future updates. 
  • Doors at the Cross Insurance Arena will open at 12:00 pm. As a security measure, the Cross Arena staff will search all people and bags entering the Arena. Please allow extra time and minimize personal belongings to reduce potential delays.
  • Arrive at the Cross Insurance Arena between 12:00 pm and 1:15 pm.  Tables will be set up alphabetically by last name for you to pick up the items required to participate (i.e. the card you will hand to the reader, honor cords, etc.).
  • When you cross the stage during the ceremony, you will receive an empty diploma cover.  Your diploma will be mailed to you.  Transcripts showing your completed degree can be requested through the Registration Office.
  • Once you have crossed the stage, return to your seat and remain seated until all graduates have been announced and the platform party has left the stage. The faculty marshals will release you, by row, after the ceremony.

Graduation Status

On Track to Graduate - Based on the courses for which you were registered at the time of your review, you are on-track to graduate for the listed review term and year. 

Eligible to Participate - You are eligible to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, but you still have as many as six credits/two courses left to complete your degree requirements. Be sure to register for these final requirements in the summer or fall so you can earn your degree. 

Not Eligible to Participate - You have more than 6 credits remaining to complete your degree, and are not eligible to participate in the next Commencement Ceremony.

Date Last Reviewed: If you have changed your schedule in any way since this date, your status could be invalid.  

Remaining Requirements: All courses you need to take in order to complete your requirements and earn your degree (including current registration). 

Remaining requirements are listed by course code. Most electives will be followed by the number of elective credits required in parentheses. Example: SSCI ELE (3 cr) = social science elective, 3 credits required. If no number appears, the standard number of credits for the course are required.

Your graduation status and the remaining requirements listed are based on the information we had at the time we performed the review. If you have made any arrangements for substitutions, your department chair must communicate those directly to the Registrar. If you have transfer credit from another institution, they must send us an official transcript. Work Experience, Challenge Exams, CLEP scores, etc. must all be reported to the Registrar in order for your degree to be awarded.

For a clear explanation of your progress, you should review your degree audit by using the “Run My Degree Audit” link in MyDegree. Please be certain that you have clicked Recalculate Student Progress before opening the report. Any requirements with an X in front of it is unmet. Any grades without credit amounts following are developmental courses that do not count toward requirements (but the total credits at the top of the form include these credits). For double majors, degree audits only capture one major.

Additional reviews will be conducted after Add/Drop, after the Withdrawal deadline, and after final grades are submitted. Your graduation information will update as we make changes to your record. Before contacting the Registration Office with any questions, please discuss any issues with your faculty advisor.

 

Official Printed Transcript

To request a Southern Maine Community College printed transcript, please download and complete the Transcript Request Form. Requests must be made in writing by the student, and a signature is required for their release. Instructions on how to electronically sign the Transcript Request Form can be found here. There is no charge for print transcripts.

Official Electronic Transcript

SMCC has partnered with Parchment, the most widely adopted digital credential service, to allow us to deliver official transcripts electronically in a fast, simple, and secure way. E-transcripts carry a six dollar processing fee and can be requested by setting up an account through SMCC’s Parchment Storefront.

Please note: Transcripts are not released if there is an outstanding financial obligation. Copies sent directly to the student will be stamped “student copy.”
