Graduation Information

Unfortunately, it has become clear that SMCC won’t be able to hold our traditional face-to-face commencement this spring. Given the continued higher number of COVID-19 cases in Maine and CDC guidelines around gatherings, we have decided that SMCC will hold a virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate our graduates as they move forward to bright futures.

Like last spring, we have formed a virtual commencement committee that includes faculty members in our Communications and New Media Studies Department, who will produce a ceremony that is memorable and personal for our students. We will send caps and gowns to graduates this spring with diploma sleeves, and we will be encouraging students to provide pictures for inclusion in our virtual program.

The ceremony is scheduled for release on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 11am, which will be available through our public website, We will keep everybody informed and up-to-date in the near future. The ceremony will continue to be available after initially airing on SMCC’s YouTube Channel:

In the meantime, please remember that if you completed your degree or certificate requirements this past fall, or plan to complete them this spring, to submit your graduation application so that you can have your status reviewed and diploma ordered.  You can email your application to for processing and a determine of eligibility (on-track to graduate or within six credits of completing).

Eligible participants will have their names and any honors they have received read aloud and their photo shown at the virtual commencement, if they upload a photo by March 31.  Participants may want to take their commencement photo in their cap and gown.  You can order your cap and gown (as well as a diploma cover, tassels and cords, etc.) here until March 5.  All commencement related items requested using the form above by March 5 will be mailed to the participant's address on file with the College during the week of March 8.

Photos, with cap/gown or without, can be uploaded here by March 31.  Guidelines for photos can be downloaded in the "Graduation Forms and Information" section to the right.   If you have placed restrictions (FERPA) on the College’s release of directory information regarding your status as a student here, your name will not be included in the virtual graduation ceremony and will not be included on any lists of graduates made available to the media or any other interested parties.

To be eligible for honors designation or awards, you must be on track to complete all degree requirements by May 16, 2021.  Eligibility for honor cords and tassels representing these designations will be made based on your reported grades through Fall 2020.  These will not include the Spring 2021 semester grades as those courses will not yet be completed.  Any changes that occur as a result of Spring 2021 grade reporting will be reflected in the honors designation on your final transcript.
