Logging In For the First Time

The first time you log in to an SMCC system, you will need to set up security questions and change your password. To get started, sign in with your username and starter password.

Please note: This process does not apply to anyone who logged in prior to July 18, 2013. This is for brand-new users only.

Step 1: Your Username and Starter Password

For Students


Your username is your full first name, middle initial, and full last name. It is all one word, lowercase.


Your password is the first letter of your first name, the first four letters of your last name, and the last four numbers of your Social Security Number. It is all one word, lowercase.

For Staff and Faculty


Your username is your first initial and last name. It is all one word, lowercase.


Your password, by default, is your initials and birthdate in the format FIRST + last + MMDDYY. If you requested a different password, it is that password.

Example: Ali Jones' default password, born on November 3, 1972, is Aj110372.

Step 2: Change your Password

Once you sign in, you will be informed that your password has expired and needs to be changed.

Enter a new password. It can be anything you want, so long as it meets the security requirements:

Enter your new password, confirm it by re-entering it in the second box, then click Submit. You should receive a message saying your password was changed. If not, please check that your entered both passwords the same way and that your new password meets our security requirements.

Step 3: Set up a Security Question

Now that you've changed your password, you need to set up a security question. If you forget your password later, you can have it reset by answering the question. Log in using your new password and you will be prompted to set up your security question.

The security question and answer can be anything. Please make yours something that only you can answer. Anyone that knows your username can try your security question. The question shown is an example only. We do not recommend using this as your security question. When you are ready, click Submit. You will receive a message that your login was successful.
